Seven Twitter Mistakes
Twitter is a powerful marketing tool but most people tend to abuse it. Here are the seven mistakes and the steps how you can get to top speed on Twitter etiquette and proper use.
1st mistake: Without Picture.
This one is very obvious because how would people know you if there’s no picture. So, if you don’t have a picture, just upload it now.
2nd mistake: Bad Auto-DM.
I know that it seems like it’s a great way to automatically advertise your business or product, but it's not. Auto-DM with a sales promotion and then a link to your website or eBook just damages your credibility and people might think you’re just a spammer. Have a link to your site in your profile, its ok, but switch off your auto-dm. Otherwise, just make it say 'hello!' or 'hi!' at the most.
3rd mistake: Auto Twitter Software.
Software which posts your profile automatically is currently everywhere. In auto-pilot, people can tweet a URL, a joke or anything as many as they want. These are very irritating to everyone. Firstly it doesn’t give a very good job of tricking us into believing that they're human and secondly, most people just send loads of marketing messages to abuse them. Even if some products do hide themselves well, the growing sophistication of Twitter users will find them out sooner or later. This can be done by tagging the profile as a spammer or blocking them outright.
4th mistake: Not joining in.
Some people only go on Twitter to 'broadcast' to everyone. This doesn't help. Reply to people's Tweets you find interesting and learn to interact like in real life. Ask any questions as long as it’s engaging and not just a one way conversation.
5th mistake: Being Too Random.
Contrary to what most people who are not using twitter, think that it’s not actually for informing the world on whatever you are doing every second of the day and nobody cares. For us normal people, we should keep our tweets about links, jokes or helpful tips more interesting so that people will value it.
6th mistake: Too Much Too Quickly.
People posting tweets non-stop for about ten minutes is a bad this, and why you may ask? Well if you can only see that person’s tweet in your stream and no one else, wouldn’t that irritate you? So, your tweets must have around two to ten tweets a minute and that should create some space for others to peek thru.
7th mistake: Lone Wolfing.
If someone takes effort in following, then by all means, you must return the favor and follow them back. People appreciate this because they see that you’re interested in sharing with everyone, not just with selected people.
By all means make another account that can follow only you, but don’t use it as your active account. Just keep in mind that twitter is no different from interacting in the real world.
